In The Middle Of The Night

The benefits of hiding a credit card is that groggy, middle of the night purchase, like these, are easily avoided.

Okay So I Forgot My Questions.

Augh.  This week already feels like a wind tunnel.

I bought a hat on impulse.  Why? I don't know, I meant to buy gloves, instead I bought a trapper's hat from a department store that originated from a fur trapping company (10 points for the name of this department store).  

And this was my outfit of the day.

Oh. A store I really really like is having a sale.  I'm hoping to go later this week.  Perhaps by then my face won't look like a Hussein Chalayan dress from SS09.

!! Something less random:  After watching that Janelle Monae video and seeing someone with one, I kind of want a cummerbund to use as a belt.  I'm fairly sure these cost about as much as another belt at Value Village (~$3), but we'll see where this goes.

Blogging is better than post-it notes when it comes to remembering certain things.

OMG I DIY-D

Evidently I am an "invisible-for-various-days-then-multiple-offender" kind of blogger seeing as I leave this and then visit it more than once when I do.

*ahem*

This is just one of my projects.  I didn't finish the other YSL project because I realised that it would probably be best to work with a clean gray sweater, as opposed to a not-so-much one.  So I went with this first, based on the following image (which I found via Google Image search)

First I thought of rendering the girl in Illustrator but that was a pain in the ass so I decided to outline her instead (which didn't show up properly when saved and printed).  So instead I opted to print it out blank and then improvise.

From Default

• I liked the shirt.  It is from H&M and is this a nice heathered/sheer fabric/wash.
• the image is still really stiff.  The shirt is currently in a knot on my desk to be wrinkled into relaxation.
• I'm going to do this again, and when I do I will fix Yves Saint Laurent's face.  This was merely attempt 1.  I will also try to center the shirt more because it's kind of off to the left right now.
• I really like the red line and the separation.  I think it's a little sinister - what is your opinion of this?  Does it distract from the image?  Do you think I should just make it one thing?

I bought new rings today in honour of getting a new job.  Pictures of my metal flair to follow.

Design 101: Imitation = Flattery (?)

I saw the Bloc Party singles via wikipedia (because I'm that girl) and had a nasty few days where I thought I was crazy for recognizing the layout of it.  If I could find a proper photograph of the Transmission single, I could probably illustrate this better.  I remember when Bloc Party first came out it was during this whole "omg, remember Joy Division? Probably not, but they were so cool!" and they were supposed to be one of the big bands to make us young 'uns "rediscover" Joy Division.

Just an observation.   I really like the theme of these, but was curious as to how conscious the design decision was.

Wow, I'm Really Doing-It-Myself

Sometimes ideas that are born at 2am or so turn out to be good, fruitful ideas.

Like I said, I did research and found a font that was close to the design of the original YSL logo, and downloaded it.  I've been tinkering with the layout today, and came up with a few samples. Here they are, the orignal logo is up last:

I'm also toying with my actual initials.  My middle name is my mother's maiden name and the initial used is up for debate. 

Depending on whom you ask, it is either D or L (my middle name is DeLima), so I may also come up with a few more before settling on an "official" logo.

The problem I found, layout-wise, ended up being the Ms.  The letter M is symmetrical, the letters Y and L not so much.  A vertical layout (like the original) looks a little odd, but I tried to keep to the ladder-esque design, for the most part.

This project has gone so much further than my usual diy projects.  Possibly because I have time and this one is easier.

I think, "I can't fall asleep" goes without saying.

I want to do this with a sweater.  But not with the letters YSL.  Earlier today, I researched and found 3 fonts that are similar to the logo (which, as i found out, is not an actual font but a custom-design by Adolphe Cassandre) and I'm thinking of doing this with my initials.  I do have three of those.

Also:  I was parusing Refinery29 and found this article about St. Vincent, the singer.

Seriously, she has gotten a lot better since smartening up.  I.E: from season one to two.

I really loved the black and check dress she wore when Don came back.

THE MAD MEN SEASON FINALE WAS BANANAS, BANOODLES, AND ANY OTHER NONSENSICAL WORD YOU CAN COME UP WITH TO DESCRIBE SOMETHING THAT TOTALLY BLEW YOUR MIND.  I MEAN SERIOUSLY, IT EFFING BLEW MY MIND IN SO MANY WAYS.  FOR EXAMPLE: USING THE CUBAN MISSILE CRISIS AS A PARALLEL TO THE EMOTIONAL TRAJECTORIES OF ITS MAIN CHARACTERS, WAS FUCKING AMAZING.  THE PART WHERE DON AND ROGER SAY "WE REALLY DON'T KNOW WHAT IS GOING ON" AND ARE TALKING ABOUT THE MISSILE CRISIS WAS A PERFECT EXECUTION OF DRAMATIC IRONY. AND BETTY.  DEAR BETTY.  YOU MAKE THE NAME BETTY LESS ANNOYING, AND FOR THAT I THANK YOU.

Some woman at Holt Renfrew thought I could afford a version of that shoe on the bottom left there.  It looks like a gold square is sliding off your shoe - a lovely trick for the eyes.
