Metal Karaoke.

I sang this:

(the girl part) and various other songs. 'Twas a fun night all in all.  I felt mildly powerful ordering my drinks (which I managed to not overdo. woot).

Continuing explorations in metal and metallic-themed objects.  I did the "wrapachainaroundyourwrist" again, and this time squeezed an old watch that doesn't work anymore into it.  The chain, that used to be "gold" and is now faded, looked kinda good with the gold and silver watch.  Marina likes.  She may do again.
Also, I have a pair of boots that I was going to give to Goodwill but now I think I may keep and (at the risk of sounding kind of trendy and annoying) Stud them.  But I saw these shoes where the heel had 3 bolts in it (don't know the designer or else - trust me - I'd display them here and mail you the napkins later) so maybe I'll use those?  I don't know.  There tends to be a 3 month gestation period between the idea and the actual "doing-it-myself"

ALSO; some idiot decided to dispose of this poster (on my birthday, sweetola).  They also had a Don Quixote poster but I'm more of a Dostoevsky gal myself.

this reminds me; I need a new book.  any suggestions?  I'm on a non-fiction kick, and I just finished THISBOOK.

Bad Influence? Good Influence? Who Knows.

This makes me want mustard socks a lot.

I'm having a wee bit of a crisis.  My new job is physical and requires me to be wearing the kind of thing I wore every day in high school.  The kind of "outfit" that made me swear to myself that I would get my shit together and start dressing like a proper human being, so that I would never look that messy and roughandtumble again.
But now I have to because I can't wear a skirt and can't wear anything I don't want to be covered in dust.

(help me more than when i needed help with casual dressing, oh lords of fashionstyleanddesign)

Floral Armour

I'm getting sick (damn).
So I decided to protect myself by wearing my wool Zara dress and this:

A humongous scarf I bought at Courage My Love for $0.50 awhile ago.  It's been sitting in my scarf box for months, only because I couldn't figure out a way to wrap it around my neck without looking too bulky.  I had this whole hoodie-scarf-wrap thing going on for awhile, and today I just decided that I would wear it like armour:  Loose-but-Tight around my neck.

For awhile it looked a little like that bodysuit from Maison Martin Margiela I posted awhile back.  Sadly, I could not seem to recreate that now, no matter how hard I tried (which is just the way it goes).

Tired? I am.

I have no idea.  I'm not even confused, I just have no idea.
This weekend was hot and lazy and I started to feel lonely.  Reading other blogs that start with "sorry I haven't updated, school just started", helping friends pack and then receiving and adding their new numbers to my phone has made me realize that I'm not going to school and everyone else is.  I wore a pair of flare bottom pants which felt weird.  I've lived in my skinny/slim jeans/pants for so long that my legs felt all airy under the flare.
Weird.
The Goal was a bit of a 70s thing.  I was halfway there.  My friend said I was very 70s while I helped tape up sheet music for her (but I think maybe she said that so I would keep taping up sheet music for her).  I'm still a wee bit teetery on what I'm doing going into September.  Summer is almost done and theoretically I should be all a twitter about getting to wear pants and sweaters and jackets (oh my!) in fall yet............I'm not.  I think hating my job is seeping into other parts of my life and is causing me to a) fall into a pattern and b) not really see how clothing is looking on me.  Because I would rather just snap my fingers and have something appropriate on than actually have to put thought into "work wear".
The Goal this weekend provided a nice little break from not thinking.  Should I do this more often (probably)?

I also did this with my scarf today.  I saw it on Garance Dore awhile ago.  It's a good scarf-in-summer thing.  I quite like it.

In unrelated news: I get to go to v-fest this weekend! I get to see bands! Bands like Sons and Daughters and Bloc Party and Oasis! And I'll be recycling! WOOOO!

Pants I Do Not Own

(yet)

Because I would like to find pants like these:

from garance dore & earnest sewn, respectively

Sadly this girl lives in France so I doubt I'll find them here.  The closest thing I  can think of is the Zazo jean from Earnest Sewn, seen beside the pants I don't think I'll ever find.  I like where the rise sits, just at that really flattering part of my waist.  And since Earnest Sewn is one of the lines carried by Winners I have a chance of owning them.

If only they had side pockets (if only everything had side pockets)...

Also: here's a random question few will answer:  Does anyone know a good tailor in Toronto? I need one to fix what I don't know how to fix myself.

Mirror Games

One of my favourite drama exercises (in high school and continued into the world of rehearsals) is the mirror game.

Viktor & Rolf just stole my heart.

The Space Between.

I've never wanted to update my blog more than this past week, when my life-supported computer finally came to a sputtering, catastrophic stop this week. My dad is slowly trying to fix her, but the girl is old. She's not gonna last for long. I need to save up to buy a new computer (hopefully a laptop, probably refurbished since those are cheaper) which means that my shopping is going to have to be rationed. I have planned on one thing to buy but everything else is being put on hold.

Which is very disappointing considering this is the week that my eyes were opened to Supermarket.

It's an etsy-esque website. Full of independent, unknown designers (some of whom are also on etsly) but at a slightly higher price point. With a cleaner more minimal design to the site.
Supermarket is not quite as well sorted as etsy is (harder to narrow down what you want) but I feel like the quality is slightly higher? Or maybe it's just the pretentiousness or prestige that comes with using Helvicta?
Here are a few examples of what I'm trying to get at:
The Dino-Love necklace by verameat jewelry. You can browse her products by collection, or see all of them at once. And you see through this page and others, the quality of photography is slightly higher. More....produced.

I'm a sucker for design. Half of the reason why I love day trips to Ikea is because they're so simple, straightforward and well produced. Well thought of. I mean, I like one of a kind as much as the next person but I swear: If you come up with a sleek marketing campaign. Maybe throw in a little Helvicta to satisfy my wee hipster heart, I'll be yours forever.
Intelligent illustration that borrows elements from various periods of history while still catering to the childish air this generation is still holding on to, like Little Otsu has on his stationary or an ultramodern frivolous "piece" like the "Container for one thing" from Perch is what Supermarket is great for. Quirky yet sophisticated. A good balance between adult and still cheeky.

Their layout reminds me of Lookbook's layout. Bold straightforward lettering, underlined where need be, no fancy illustrations to distract you from what you are there for: to see great independent design that you would not have heard of otherwise.

Do a search under "designers" and you'll see that these are all people who are dead serious about what they do.
It is yet another site that I will browse for hours and make mental notes of in hopes of one day being able to order something and not feel extremely guilty about it. Maybe, on that day, I'll be ordering and browsing and falling prey to marketing on a beautiful new computer.......probably a mac.

The Point. The Thing. It. The Gusto.

Caption: It's Okay To Try New Things

Which, in case anyone was wondering, is the reason why I started Still Better And Worse.
And maybe, one day, I may even wear this. In honour of Skittles.

Pessimistic? or Hipsterific?

Hehehe. Funny in part because it is true. Festivals are great for a little while but then you realise "I have to get home......but so do the hundreds of other people who are also watching Bjork"

My Wallet Ran Away

She said something about abuse......I don't know. She started crying and said she was going to stay with her mother for a few days after I came home with these:

It was the heel. Okay, maybe the cushioned toe too.

Also, I found another one:
Lookbook.nu
This one seems different from the others somehow. It's pretty self-explanatory, a lookbook. I'd have to sign up to really examine it further, but there looks to be a vintage website in addition to the main, and judging from the long list on the right hand column, they have separate websites based on your outfit category (?)
The site is also invite only.....interesting. I wonder why. Perhaps closer examination will reveal a reason.
